Range Commands

Unfortunately, Chabot Gun Club’s lease was not renewed by the East Bay Regional Park District and the marksmanship range is now permanently closed. We thank all of our tens of thousands of patrons for your support for more than fifty years at this important facility. There are no plans to open up at another location at this time, although we still are open to suggestions.

The range commands are not a mystery. We publish them and encourage you to download them so you have them with you until you know them by heart.

Range Commands

          Bold = Use Every Time

          Italics = Use as Needed

          (What you do)

I. One Minute Left In This Firing Period. Please prepare for the target change. (Time to get ready so you are not rushed at the cease fire.)

ll. Cease Fire! (Stop shooting and take your finger off the trigger.) Cease Fire! (Don’t make us come down there!)

Unload. (Unload, that means . . .)

Remove all magazines. (Remove all magazines from the guns.)

Open all actions. (Open all actions so they stay open. If they don’t stay open by themselves, get an action stick from us to hold them open.)

Bench all firearms pointed downrange. (Lay the guns on the shooting benches with the pointy end pointed toward the targets.)

Pick up the things you will need for the target change period and take them with you back behind the red safety line. (Pick up all the things you will need for this target change period (including targets, tape, staple guns, cans of soda, etc.) and take them with you back behind the red safety line.)

The Range Safety Officer will come by at this time to make sure your firearms are open and unloaded.

Do not return to the shooting benches after he/she has passed by. (If you need to go to the shooting bench after he/she has passed by, signal us or just wait until next time.)

lll. Do not handle any firearms or equipment on or near the shooting benches during the target change period. (If your guns are already in the rack or cased behind the red line, you can move them around, but not near the shooting benches!)

Anyone not going downrange must stay back behind the red safety line.

Everyone, please do not pick anything up nor set anything down on or near the shooting benches as you pass through. (Don’t even think about it, we can hear you.)

Check, change or put up your targets.

Move out please! (Now you walk between the benches to the targets.)

(When you are done, return behind the red line without touching or stopping at or near the shooting benches.)

IV. Is the pistol line clear? (If you are at the pistol range, look downrange. If you don’t see anyone in front of the shooting benches, raise your hand in the air.) Thank you.

Is the rifle line clear? (If you are at the rifle range, look downrange. If you don’t see anyone in front of the shooting benches, raise your hand in the air.) Thank you.

On the rifle and the pistol line, you have a fifteen minute firing period.

You may commence firing. (Now you may go forward to the shooting benches.)

V. Please remember to case and uncase all firearms at the shooting benches, pointed downrange. Do not case or uncase any firearm anywhere behind the red safety line.

Please remember to wear eye and ear protection anytime you are forward of the red safety line during the firing period.

Smoking is permitted only on the patio next to the snack bar or in the gazebos.

(Drink your milk and take your vitamins, we care about your health up here.)
